The Best Holiday Ever
“Instead of wondering when your next vacation is, maybe you should set up a life you don't need to escape from.” Seth Godin
Due to some unexpected turns of events, I found myself on a surprise holiday. I’ll spare you the lengthy details but I found myself taking a couple of weeks off without anything special planned.
As my accidental holiday slowly draws to an end I’m wondering if I spent it in the best way possible. It’s pretty rare to have time off like this. Did I make the most of it?
Instead of taking a last minute trip to some exotic place, I’ve spent this time mostly home doing the following:
Running longer in the mornings, because I don’t have to rush back and actually sticking to my running schedule (almost)
Visiting London for a day and bumping into an old friend (as you do, London is such a small town, right!)
Spending time with my family. Doing nothing else, while spending time with family
Going to the beach and flying a kite (first time ever!)
Seeing friends for lunch, going on a lunch date with my husband and having long, leisurely lunches all by myself
Making new skin care products and experimenting with new perfume ideas
Decluttering the house, defrosting the freezer and cleaning the oven (riveting!)
Getting pampered at the hairdresser’s
Spending mornings at Starbucks drinking coconut lattes, and writing new blog posts
Cooking nice meals from scratch
Was it a good way to spend this time? Was it better than a last minute holiday to Koh Samui?
Yes! I loved it!
I’m so glad I didn’t have to be anywhere else. I’m so glad I didn’t have a structured schedule.
The most precious holiday gift that I could’ve given myself was - time!
Having time go for a run without any rush was wonderful, and got me back on track with my training.
Spending time with family, without distractions, is precious beyond words.
Having time for creative explorations like writing and making cosmetics, fills me with joy and excitement.
Working through a list of chores that had been nagging me for MONTHS was the magic I needed to de-stress.
Spending time alone is a luxury to me.
Catching up on sleep. Heaven.
The opening quote by Seth Godin is really what living a good life is all about. I don’t want to escape my life into some exotic adventures. I just want to have a bit more time to live my ordinary life and enjoy it fully with no rush.
Right now, that is the best holiday I can think of.
